Local History
The area first appeared on the map as a rest stop for miners heading into the Rockies during the Gold Rush. Travelers moving along the Overland Trail noted the golden ridges of wheat surrounding the valley — and the name stuck. When the mining rush faded, many of those same miners stayed and started farming the fertile soil, planting orchards and vegetable fields that supplied Denver. By the mid-1900s, Wheat Ridge had evolved into the carnation capital of the world and earning the nickname "Carnation City." While flower production has waned, that agricultural identity is still celebrated today through the annual Carnation Festival. The city officially incorporated in 1969.Annual Events and Community Traditions
